Former CEO of Sanford Health Plan and Health Alliance Medical Plans Brings Invaluable Experience & Insight on Health Plan Clients to Rapidly-Growing Digital Health Technology Solution for Daily Care Motivation
September 5, 2024

September 5, 2024 – Los Angeles, CAWellth, the leading science-backed daily care motivation solution that empowers members to prioritize their health, today announced that it has named former Sanford Health Plan CEO John Snyder as its Chief Operating Officer. With over 40 years of leadership experience in the healthcare industry, Mr. Snyder brings invaluable perspective to Wellth on the needs of large health plans across the country, as well as a deep understanding of the challenges they face.

In his new role, Snyder will oversee Wellth’s operations, assist in identifying and implementing new growth strategies and play a key role in expanding the company’s business development efforts. He will also help to strengthen Wellth’s customer-first approach and bring operational expertise as Wellth continues to onboard new health plan partners and members.

Wellth CEO and Co-Founder Matt Loper said, “Leaders of John Snyder’s caliber and experience are uniquely positioned to help us scale to the next phase of our growth. As someone who served as the CEO of large health plans for nearly a decade and held numerous senior leadership positions in the industry before that, John has seen every facet of the healthcare space and understands the needs of both health plans and their members. We are thrilled to welcome John to help us advance our mission of helping people live healthier lives by motivating and rewarding daily behavior change.”

During Snyder’s time as CEO, Sanford Health Plan was a Wellth customer, using the company’s solution to build healthier behaviors among the plan’s most challenging member populations. Snyder came away from the experience with a strong impression of Wellth’s uniquely effective approach.

Wellth COO John Snyder said, “As a health plan CEO, I have tried everything and lived through multiple technology hype cycles for member engagement solutions. Across everything I’ve seen, Wellth was the most impactful solution for reaching and motivating previously unengaged members. I experienced firsthand how Wellth was able to impact population health and create healthier behaviors in members who historically had not responded to any other outreach. Joining the Wellth leadership team gives me the chance to apply what we learned at Sanford and positively impact the healthcare ecosystem across payers, providers, and most importantly – members.”

Wellth incentivizes members to take consistent steps toward building healthy habits through meaningful daily interactions. By checking in on an easy-to-use mobile app to demonstrate that they are following their personalized care plans, members can earn rewards to help them pay for crucial items like food, transportation and other necessities.

Wellth leverages insights from the more than 28 million daily interactions its solution has generated across all demographics and age groups to develop behavior change programs that are personalized for users’ needs and treatment plans. By basing its approach on behavioral science principles like the endowment effect and loss aversion – and incorporating machine learning to optimize behaviors and progress – Wellth’s solution is delivering groundbreaking results for health plans, including:

  • 42% average reduction in inpatient utilization;
  • 29% average reduction in Emergency Department (ED) utilization;
  • 16% improvement to medication adherence; and
  • 9% average improvement to blood pressure.

Prior to his time at Sanford Health Plan, Snyder served as the CEO of Health Alliance Medical Plans in Illinois. Before that, he served as Executive Vice President and System COO for Carle Health System, and as COO for Carle Foundation Hospital for over 22 years. Additionally, he taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an Adjunct Professor for nearly 12 years during his time at Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Health System.
